~Brought Ben into work for the afternoon yesterday (it was bring you kid to work day, after all!) I brought him in the stroller and carried him in the sling on my hip, which is something that I haven't done in ages.  He fit perfectly in there, and the bright green sling looked nice with my shirt(:P) He was awesome - we visited a few coworkers for a little while, then I plopped him down on a blanket with a bucket of cheerios, cup of water and some toys. He entertained himself for about 90 minutes.    I miss my little coworker today :(

~Judd has his wisdom teeth out on Wed.  He's doing about a billion times better than I did 15 years ago, but all of mine we impacted and none of his were.  Last night, Ben at more 'solid' food than Judd did.  ha!

~I don't usually get sentimental or happy about the news these days, but the story about Stephen Hawking riding the vomit comet is a great story.  Why hadn't he done this before??

~there was a story on the news (yesterday's Today show?) about the reemergence of Wet Nurses.  Some women pay $1k a week for someone else to nurse their kid!  I'm super pro-bf, but if I couldn't for some reason, my kid would be getting formula. I MIGHT investigate a milk bank, and could maybe fathom having a trusted friend/family who was currently BF feed him on an emergency basis, but regularly?  uh no.

~in a similar vein, was watching Planet Earth / Shallow Seas and learned that a 1 year old Blue Whale drinks 137 gallons of milk a day.  WOAH!

~I finally got my work desktop computer converted to a laptop/workstation.  I've got a Dell Latitude D260, which works just fine, but the screen sucks.  I've been REALLY spoiled with my Mac....   It IS nice to be able to connect wirelessly at home, though, but the whole touchpad/eraser curser thing sucks.  Again, Apple's seems so much easier to use.
Haven't posted about nursing/pumping in a while, but that's because things are going well
Read more... )

Overall, I'm pretty proud of myself for lasting a year.  There were some tough times pumping, but overall it was easier than I thought.  (Still don't know how exclusive pumpers do it, though!!)  Nursing is SO much more convienent that I thought.   I'm so completely comfortable with NIPing that it amazes me..I'm more concerned about finding a quiet place so Ben can focus rather than finding a quiet place so I won't bother anyone.

Go Team Boob!

I'm not usually one for blinky smiley faces but this made me laugh:

I wouldn't consider myself a 'boob nazi' but in the past month or so have really been surprised about how strongly I feel about breastfeeding. I've never been challenged when nursing in public, but want to print out the Maryland state Breastfeeding laws just to have on hand. I'm not going to be In Your Face about it, but I'm also not going to sit on a toilet in a dingy bathroom.

The good:
Had lunch/outing with 2 other mothers with infants whom I work with. Lovely day. We picniced, went to the Visionary Art Museum in town (folk artists and untrained artists - fantastic for kids!), and had lots of Nursing in Public. It was nice - and the museum staff were fantastic in their support. One employee even told my friend Stacey that she'd clear a bench for her if she needed one in a different location :)

the bad
I get so annoyed at the uneducated. The women who say they won't be able to bf because they have small boobs, etc. What makes me angrier are the way that these myths keep being passed on as truths, and it seems that the basics of breastfeeding aren't really covered in prenatal care. You're lead to believe that your baby will die if, heaven forbid, you have a piece of sushi, but so little on WHAT your body is doing and how breastfeeding 'works'

the ugly (and this IS ugly)
A woman I work with had a son in February. She started back to work in April, dutifully going down to the nurses office (our designated 'pumping room') several times a day for the past 3 months with no problem.

Yesterday, she had stepped away from her desk. When she returned, one of her male coworkers was found opening her cooler bag and getting out a bottle of expressed milk!! He thought it would be 'funny' to put some in his coffee! I flipped out when I heard this. (coworker definitely flipped out)

Don't know what kind of disciplinary action the Milk Thief had, but will find out on Monday. I dont know what I would do if that happened to me. What kind of charges could you press against this asshole?
[livejournal.com profile] tray85 posted a link to these super yummy Lactation Boosting Oatmeal, Chocolate Chip, and Flaxseed cookies a few weeks ago.

They are SO.FOOKING.GOOD

Better than any oatmeal cookie I've ever had.

When I make 'em again, I'm going to try to up the amount of flaxseed and brewers yeast a bit. The oatmeal camoflauged any offputting taste and texture.

Oh yeah, and I've noticed a bit of excess supply. Awesome, as I'm really trying to stock up the freezer this month
its slightly disturbing when you realize that your infant's head is smaller than your boob........
