ahh back to work.  blech.   I'd much rather be sitting outside reading a book......

I spent most of the  weekend in the bathroom  (but its not what you think)!

We're still working on the bathroom renovation projects....  The lights for the half bath got screwed up in shipping (i.e. wrong ones sent!) so we can't put up the mirror yet, either. Grr...  Otherwise, its looking great - the orange walls came out well & the refinished vanity (from ugly 1970's "medium oak" to rich Espresso Brown!) looks fantastic, esp considering I repainted it on a whim.  I just want that room done, so I can go buy the aqua hand towels that I've been eyeing...must have fun contrasting colors in half bath.  I found a couple of nice japanese teacups/sauce dishes at Target for $1 that will go nicely in there, too.  Score!

With the half bath pretty much completed, I moved to the upstairs bath to start removing the pink wallpaper, which went surprisingly well, esp considering the horror that the downstairs removal was.  Just need to wash down the walls, patch the few holes, chip off the pink tile 'baseboard' and painting can begin!  Floor tile demo SHOULD follow shortly, but we're waiting until it gets closer to the floor install (which should happen in the next 2 weeks??!) before we rip out the vanity.   (Btw, the Martha Stewart in me is telling me to save some of the floor tile to make a mosaic flower pot out of, but we'll see..)

If if were up to me, I'd just replace the vanity now and have the new floor laid around it, but for some reason, Judd's hung up on the fact that if we do that, the new vanity will be 1/4" lower than it currently is.  Um....if we were talking 2 inches, I'd buy it.  I tried explaining to him that 1/4" is the difference between him being barefoot and wearing slippers, but he wouldn't buy it.

As for now, we're not doing anything with the tub/pink tile in the tub.  We're most likely going to get it reglazed, but will probably hold off a little while on it.  (I'm secretly looking forward to cocoa brown walls with pink tile...
even for a short time)

Enough of bathroom talk...time to escape to
I'm still at a loss for a big vaca.   I keep thinking about a mini-trip to Memphis for Judd's birthday, but his summer schedule is rapidly filling, between big work proposals, a 10 day trip to Colombia, our tiki party weekend, and the beach week at NC, opportunities for away weeks/long weekends are getting slim, especially as we promised to take time to just relax in the yard/local pool this summer.  Why buy a house w/ yard if you can't enjoy it??

I started looking at cashing in FF miles to get to Memphis, only to see that for a mere 10k more we can get to Hawaii.  Hmmmmmmm.   Memphis or Kona? (Hawaii being the only island we haven't been to yet)  If we do Memphis, it would be sometime in June...Kona, not until October/November probably, but that STILL leaves me with the question of what to do for Judd's BD.

arugh!

okay, off to do some real work for a while........

It sounds like you deserve some R&R! Are the trips to Colombia and NC for fun, or business?

The bathroom sounds like it is really progressing! I think pink and brown could look neat too! Will you post pics?

Colombia (as in the South American country) is for Judd's work...I'm not going on that one. NC is for fun - my parents have a condo timeshare down there that we go to every year. Its nice & relaxing, but its not Hawaii!!

You KNOW I'll post bathroom pics once they're done!

Is it Myrtle Beach? Patrick's aunt has a timeshare there. They gave us a week of time as a wedding gift, and we got to enjoy that last summer.

So you've been to every other island of Hawaii? Which is your favorite? I've only been to O'ahu, and we stayed right downtown in Waikiki, so I'm sure that was not the most beautiful place that group of islands has to offer.

My best friend in middle school is Colombian - he was adopted. He'd never been back because he thought it was too dangerous. I have no idea if that's still the case or what.

nope == nags head, which is about 8 hours north of MB

We've been to O'ahu, maui (2 day trip off of the work-prompted O'ahu trip) and Kauai. Loved Kauai, but want to see Kona!

Is there a reason you were looking at Memphis (rather than some other destination)? I think I'd want to go to Hawaii. For some reason that would feel even more like a vacation. How long will you be looking to be gone or will that depend on the destination?

Memphis stemmed from a trip we took there a few years ago -- nice weekend with great music and bbq, something that we said "ya know, we should do this again". Unfortunately, its a bit too far to drive, and I can't get cheap tickets there (i.e. under $200 pp) as Southwest doesn't go there. I'd still love to do Memphis for 2 1/2 days (leave Fri afternoon, get back on Sunday), but when I started adding up the miles, Hawaii is looking like a better choice!

Kona is nice, though of course I think the east side of the big island is way better. :) The season doesn't start until late November, so if you come by 11/15 or so, you'll get off-season rates.

As for the linoleum under the vanity.. sinks sometimes leak. It's better to let them leak onto linoleum instead of subfloor. :)

Looking forward to pics of the bathrooms. :)

we'd plan to get out there before 11/15, so avoiding the big tourist season would be a bonus! We'll def make it around to the east side if/when we get out there....

We currently have tile under the vanity, and my idea was to just replace the vanity now and then lay the new flooring (laminate tile) around it....but yeah, I guess we WOULD remove the old tile first....good point about the leaking...

Reading about your bathroom remodel is making me anxious to get more work done on ours. Sounds like you guys are really moving along in your progress.

I've never been to Hawaii (or Memphis) but I think I'd pick Hawaii if I had the money for it.
