iphone day 4
Jul. 14th, 2008 02:20 pmso I've had a few days to play around with the new iphone and have a few thoughts
For reference, I'm coming from a pre-Pearl blackberry perspective (work issued phone).
Physical: its slick, smooth and flawless. I don't have a case for it yet, and kind of don't want one because it slides so easily into my pocket or phone pocket in my purse/bag. Love the little top sleep button. Feels really good in the hand and very easy to talk on. Judd was worried that it would feel too big to carry around (as opposed to a flip phone) but doesn't think about that anymore :P I love the lack of buttons for the most part, as everything is a quick touch screen and can be done with one hand.
phone calls: sounds perfect. The speaker phone works really well. Made most calls on 3G but a few on Edge, and couldn't tell the difference
calender/contacts/email: here's my one beef, but its more with mobileme, aka the old .mac (the 'virtual' sync' that is certainly not required but streamlines things). Since I can't hook my iphone up to my work computer, I installed mobile me (which required itunes which required firefox, all of the above isn't suppose to be on my work computer, but somehow was able to install) I can sync from moble me to my phone, but not from outlook 2003 to mobile me. After reading some mac forums, seems like everyone's having alot of problems, but I'm thinking mine are primarily related to VPN and security issues, BUT the google calendar sync works perfectly with outlook, so I'm hoping that Google will soon make a g-calendar -> icalender (mac's) sync to solve my problems.
Judd, on the other hand, is mac at work, has been a .mac user for ages, and has a mac at home, had a trouble free experience.
my gmail has had no problems, and neither does my new .me email.
the internets uses Safari and imports all of my bookmarks from home, so fantastic. Hope the lack of cut-and-paste is resolved, as this could get annoying w/ sending websites.....
applications searching throught the applications (both 3rd party and official, but free and paid) is addicting! I've gotten a bunch of games (Trism, scrabble, a driving game), most of which take advantage of the acceleramoter (the thing that knows which way you tilt your device) There's going to be TONS more added soon, and I"m hoping for a good navigation on that makes use of the GPS....which leads me to...
GPS DAMN this rocks. partnered w/ the goodness of google maps, so you click on the 'locate me' button, type in what you're looking for, it finds it, and you can get info (address, phone, website) and then touch any of those to call/view website.
Ipod after having only a shuffle for over a year, its nice to have playlists again :) video looks fantastic on the screen.
Accessories: normal headphones can work in this iphone (unlike the 1st version for some stupid reason), but the issued the headphones/mic SUCK. I wasn't into the idea of spending $100+ for decent headphones/mic that wouldnt hurt my ears, but found these great looking ones from griffin and ordered a pair of Judd and myself. I've had their original earbuds for ages and love 'em. $40 (with a 15% coupon of FIREWORKS) is the perfect amount for me to pay.....I'm a little sad they're not white, but dont really care.
As for cases, I'm not a silicone case person, so am leaning to get a nice looking slider case, like this one:

BUT this case, also by griffin, looks very nice. Lambskin like leather back, clear cover on the front that supposedly doesn't affect the touch screen

So that's it.....will still have to use my blackberry for work, but as soon as i can get the contact/calendar thing fixed, I'll be elated :)

Date: 2008-07-14 07:34 pm (UTC)I never had trouble with the headphones on my gen 1 iPhone but honestly haven't even tried the new ones. I will check out your Belkin link though!
I keep my iPhone in a vaja case. It is basically a leather pouch that has a flip to close. I love it for in the purse and carrying around the office to meetings. Plus it doesn't stay ON the phone when I'm talking, etc. :)
So glad you like it!!!

Date: 2008-07-14 08:04 pm (UTC)-master list of contacts and calender are on outlook 03 at work. iTunes, photos, etc are on home mac.
-outlook calender works perfectly with google sync (the one they provide on google -- http://www.google.com/support/calendar/bin/answer.py?answer=89955 No Ical yet, but will set up if need to use
-iphone is physically synced at home on a mac
When I tried to subscribe w/ google calender, I coudn't seem to edit the events. Will try again on this one since it seems to work for you.
I'm not committed to mobileme if I can get Google calendar to be my 'manager'

Date: 2008-07-14 08:10 pm (UTC)I can sync google contacts via mobileme on the PC without a problem (didnt check that at home yet), so I'm hoping it will come w/ the calender soon.
I dont mind manual port of the contacts, but the calendar will drive me nuts (unless I just dont use the iphone for calender at all......but I HATE the blackberry calender...)
