Today is the Baltimore Flower Mart....a mid spring 'festival' that screws up traffic and lets local florists and crafters set up in a major crossroads/park area downtown. Lots of ladies with hats and flowers, and a generally lovely atmosphere...

and lemon sticks.

This, almost more than crabcakes, is THE Baltimore food invention. So simple, so refreshing: take a lemon, roll it around on the counter to soften it up, cut off the top and a little off of the bottom to keep it flat, and shove in one of those kind of chalky old-school peppermint sticks. Suck on the top of the stick and the peppermint kind of dissolves and you get lovely minty juicy lemonyness.

YUM.
Best $2 I've spent in a while :)

I think I've seen a big plastic tubs of the sticks at Costco, and I'm gonna buy one to keep us ready for the summer.

Good thinking! I am heading there this weekend to stock up on some other household supplies. I will keep an eye out for sticks too. (And of course, a bag of lemons!) :)

I've never heard of a lemon stick. It sounds interesting and I wonder if I'd like it. I can see Andrew wrinkling his nose at me though. :P

How funny! Baltimore seems to have lots of little quirks. I watch that reality show with the crew from Charm City Cakes and they are always talking about Baltimore-unique things. Chicago does have some - mainly in the meat or cheese category. :)
