Somehow I've gotten a subscription to Parents magazine. Its something that ordinarily I'd look at in the dr's office, but never buy or subscribe to, but some diaper or carseat purchase must have triggered it. I dont mind it, esp as it has more practical info like toy reviews rather than the 'kids fashion spread' that others seem to have.

A few random notes:

-THIS little house thing is awesome. Why dont they make it for boys or in 'unisex'? Its oftly girly. Maybe I'll get one for myself........

-there was an ad for 'sleep diaper shorts'.....which implies to me that yo throw the whole shorts away when they get wet. As if the landfills aren't full enough of the diapers, now we're giving our kids disposable SHORTS. PAPER PANTS, people. And I'm sure they're not cheap. The FAQ has helpful information like "They come in a blue package for boys, and a pink package for girls"........

-there was a big article on potty training, and I know I'm not there yet (well, I AM, but Ben isn't ready yet) but there was a brief rundown of the 'schools of thought', one of which was called "Naked and $75" Sounds like a fun night, right? Wrong. The way that this 'method' works is as follows:

a) stay at home all weekend
b) roll up the rugs
c) have your kid run around all day with no pants, no diapers, no underwear for 2 days so that they know what 'pee running down your leg' feels like and prompt them to sit on the pot BEFORE this happens.
d) spend $75 on steam cleaner to clean wall-to-wall

Are they serious??!!

You know that "diaper-free by 3 (months)" that is so popular now? Well one of my friends did it. it was like they had a puppy at their house. really stinky. it turns out human urine and feces, even the baby version, is quite hard to remove from rugs and furniture. i don't think the elimination communication thing ever really worked out that well for them. She would make little ssh-ing noises for pee and ack-ack-ack noises for poop.

um, ew. I'm not a big fan of EC, but I understand the philosophy behind it. Personally, I think that an infant needs so much help with everything that I didnt want to add one more thing to my list of duties . I had enough trouble figuring out the hungry/sleepy/bored/ cries.

The thing that surprised me about the article was that it was for the older kids -- more like 3/4 yr olds! woah.

That does seem like it makes more sense though - a 3-4 yr old would at least be able to feel the pee and think - hmm, pee is uncomfortable to sit in and is stinky....maybe this potty thing isn't so bad after all.

I think allowing a weekend urine-fest at your house is more than I would be comfortable with. Sorry, but I am conditioned to find urine revolting. As I hope all children will someday be.

Want to hear something funny I too somehow am getting a subscription to Parents? I think I've gotten it for 3 months now and I'm not a parent. It definitely must be triggered by buying something since I have bought lots of things for babies/children this year. I just pass it along to my parenting friends.

I saw an article somewhere (not Parents) about how naked potty training is the new "in" way to potty train. Some parents are even pretty much potty training their kids this way from months old, like as soon as they can sit up no more diapers and it's all naked baby all the time. Hey if parents have the time, patience, and money to replace whatever gets peed on I'm all for it but I don't think it will go over mainstream.

Ah, the rose petal cottage! We're thinking about that for Ellie's Santa gift! She'd love the little washing machine you can get for it!

I get Parenting magazine...the only articles I read consistently are the Baby Bloopers and the 10-minute recipes. I actually tried a paella recipe that we really liked (and was simple, too)!

Ack! I just saw that Rose Petal Cottage thing in my magazine (also never subscribed for) and secretly hope it's still around in a couple of years for Emma. ;)

Yeah, that whole "pee on the floor" thing is very popular in the cloth diapering arena. Not my cuppa.

Hey, did I tell you we're going to see Morrissey (http://www.peacecenter.org/show.asp?ProductID=886) on Nov 4? Can't freaking WAIT!

I saw that house too and thought it was cute. Though, I already bought her a dollhouse for Christmas. Its funny, the boys at playgroup really do like the dollies. They are probably the second most fought over (after push toys).

Yeah, I'm not going to do any naked potty training in my house. I had a bad enough experience the other day when Katie took off her poopy diaper to run free. Ugh. Kate has zero interest in the potty. Some of her 2 year old friends are already potty trained. But I see plenty of 3 year olds who aren't. That'll be us - I know it.

I've known a couple people who've done that, only not inside the house. They just timed potty-training to coincide with nice weather and then spent the whole weekend outside with a naked baby in the backyard. I don't recall whether or how well it worked, since they all talked about this before I had a kid, and thus I paid just about ZERO attention to the details. heh.
