my vacuum doesn't suck. heh

thus, I'm in the market for a new one. I've got a canister Kenmore one that's served me well for the past 10 years, but I've just broken the beater brush (carpet cleaner thingy) and the wheel keeps popping off (not to mention that the dog hair smell is getting bad)...

SO........ to Dyson or not?

am I the ONLY person without a Dyson? Do I really need to spend $500 on a vac to get something decent? My current needs are: lots of carpet and lots of hardwood; stairs, lots of 'hose based' cleaning (i.e. baseboards, etc).....most of which is why I love a canister vac, but I'm open to change...

[Poll #1001551]

eta: i screwed up my poll and should have added one that says "I've got one, but its okay, nothing to shout about." stoopid inability to edit polls.....

Sorry I didn't really play properly. But get a Eureka 4870GZ Boss Smart-Vac Upright Vacuum. You can get them on Amazon or Costco for about $140. I researched a ton when we got it 8 months ago and the Dyson's got horrendous reviews by consumer reports, etc. They break often, do not have steady suction, etc. This vac is a fraction of the cost and AWESOME! I have been absolutely happy with it and recommend it all the time.

I have a dyson, and yes, I love it. It takes care of two the mess from two big dogs with ease.

My uncle has a thing for vacuums (weird, I know) and I've had/used a *lot* of vacuums in my life, as he's generous with the hand-me-downs. I like the dyson more than most, though there was an oreck making the rounds that was pretty fabulous, too.

FWIW, the dyson has held up extremely well. My housekeeper is rough on vacuums - I was averaging a new one every year, and she even broke the freaking Kirby repeatedly. The dyson has made it over two years unscathed. :knocking on wood:

All of that being said, I don't know if I'll replace our dyson with another when the time comes - they just cost an awful lot.

funny about the Kirby - I was pulled into one of their sales pitch meetings in college, and the #1 thing that they said was "you can't break it!"

What dyson do you have?

I can report that the Kirby is most definitely breakable. The housing is a tank, but there's still plenty to move and break.

We've got the DC-14.

Everyone I know who has a Dyson loves it, (they consistently get slammed in Consumer Reports, yet everyone I know in real life has nothing but good to say about them) so I am longing for one, but the price tag is making me balk!

Was it you that was thinking about getting the Dyson handheld? I need something to tackle my carpeted stairs and am thinking about the Dyson handheld.

We will be in the market for a new vacuum soon as well (I broke off the thingie that keep the vacuum upgright when not in use on my Fantom), so I will be keeping a close eye one what you get, since your needs are almost exactly the same as mine (and I'll probably copy you if you have good results).

I do have the dyson handheld, and its great for hard surface, but I wouldnt' use it for carpeted stairs. The battery life is less than stellar (maybe about 5 minutes constant running), but its great for baseboards, hardwood stairs, kitchens, etc. its okay on the carpets for little things, but with the wimpy battery life, not great for, say, your car.

The response from Dyson that I read about the battery life is that the other handheld vacs only have about 3 min of 'top performace' then limp along with weak suction. Makes sense to me, but annoying!

i've always wondered if Dysons are really that good. i can't justify the $$, even with 2 dogs and a baby, but we have an old skool Dirt Devil bagless (http://www.hsn.com/cnt/prod/default.aspx?pfid=1001175&club_id=1001175&sz=12&sf=HM0190&rdr=1&cm_mmc=ShoppingEngine*FroogleGBase*hm0190*1001175) that works SO well. We have a Eureka bagless for , but I don't like it as much.

I've heard people say the reason the Dyson doesn't get better marks in Consumer Reports is b/c they factor in the high price. It's such an expensive vacuum, but *everyone* I know who has one LOVES it and raves about it. I don't know if I'll ever actually pay $500 for one, but I'd love to own one.

By the way, woot.com has offered Dysons for significantly cheaper occasionally...they just had one for $250 + $5 shipping a week or two ago. They pop up every now and again on there, so if you aren't in a rush to buy one, you could just watch that site and wait for another woot deal.
