plastics!

for all you who've been posting about getting rid of plastic cups ([livejournal.com profile] sumama, [livejournal.com profile] spa_girl, and [livejournal.com profile] snowzilla in particular)........how do you FILL your water bottles?

I'm a brita girl at work, but the pitcher appears to be the 'bad' plastic (i.e. similar to a nalgene bottle, hard and clear).......and I'd rather have leeching chemicals than whatever sludge comes straight out of our water fountains here at work.

At home, I rely on the filter built into our fridge.....

so what's a girl to do?

First look on the bottom of your Brita filter and see what plastic # is there. You want a #2, #4 or #5. If it is one of those you are OK.

My office has subsidized vending machines so I buy a TON of little Calistoga sparkling waters in glass bottles. (25 cents - can't be beat) When that runs out I buy a big bottle of water or reuse paper cups. I am still looking for a good refillable water solution for my desk. These are the latest recs I have found but I haven't purchased one yet:
"Best Reusable Bottles: Betras USA Sports Bottles, Brita Fill & Go Water Filtration Bottle, Arrow Canteen"

BTW - seeing Brita on the list makes me think your Brita pitcher might be OK. Just check the #. :)

Does that help at all? I know it is really hard to figure out what to do. And to confuse it even more - most Nalgenes are not safe, but I have some friends with Nalgenes that are #5 and ARE safe. So you just have to look at the #.

Yeah, the Nalgene thing had me totally confused, so I just avoid Nalgene altogether now. And last night at soccer, I cringed at the myriad of Nalgene bottles, large and small, used by the kids. :(

mmmmm sparkley waters!

I looked all over the brita for the # and didn't see one. Will check the next time I fill it.

I'm glad I never really got into the Nalgene thing. If I were going to be hiking/biking, I'd just use my camelbak

(hey...that's an idea for work! :P)

The # can be hard to find - it is typically in a little triangle shaped thing. ;)

And yes - LOVE sparkly water - so addicted. :)

thanks for the link...

the more I read about all of this, maybe I'll just load up my Camelbak and WEAR 2 liters all day...

I fill my bottle at home with the in-fridge filtered water, and I'm in the same predicament as to what to do when I finish the first bottle (it's only a litre). Interesting to read about the Brita - I'll have to look into that one some more.

SIGG makes a stainless steel 1.5 litre bottle that would get me through an 8 hour day, but I have to decide if I want to lug that thing around. My 1 litre already seems so huge!

I wish our office would get a big dispenser, and that would solve a LOT!
