brrrr! Send me back to Cali, please!
Dec. 15th, 2004 02:39 pmwell, I'm back from SF and offically Freezing My Ass off. When I walked in the house last night after having the heat off for 4 days and 30' temps, it was a nipply 47' in the house. BRRR!
SF was nice, as usual, and walked a small bit of my butt off...one day, went from Union Square to Chinatown, to North Beach to Fisherman's Wharf to Ghiradelli Square to Union Street to Pacific Heights.....my hips ached but at least my knees & feet were relatively okay...
ate tons, but .....food reviews were mixed.
From worst to best:
7. In-n-Out Burger. I know, how blasphemous of me to hate the in-n-out, but I was NOT impressed. I learn later that we should have ordered stuff that wasn't off the menu. WTF? We got cheeseburgers with onions (again, later found out that we should have asked that they grill them), fries (again, should have had them Double fried), and a soda. Or I should have gotten something called "animal style" that was, yet again, NOT ON THE MENU. I further got creeped out when I noticed the bible references in the cups and french fry holders.....
6. Zuni Cafe: Ate here at 9:30 on the night that we got in, and were too beat to wait the 50+ minutes for the roasted chicken and bread salad. Instead, Judd got oysters & the ceaser salad, I got Serrato ham w/ Persimmons and ceaser salad. Those 4 plates + 4 glasses of wine = $85. DAMMMMNNNN! Not bad, but SO not worth the money.
5. Crustacean : stopped in here for a drink while waiting to meet up with a friend. Had an '80's feel to it (smokey glass, on a streetcorner, big neon Crab in the window) and was filled with (mostly large Asian) Families. We were exhaused and the Gin & Tonics hit the spot. Got a bit hungry and ordered some grilled Calamari (the only kind of calamari I'll eat) and some shrimp summer rolls. YUM!
4. Ponzu Our hotel eatery, and the bargain of the trip for happy hour -- $3.00 fancy cocktails, $2 wine, and 50 cent appitizers - things like shrimp wontons, chinese spicy meatballs, dumplings, etc. YUM!
3. Ace Wasabi Had a great time here the last time I visited, & brought Judd back. As before, YUM YUM sushi (I could have eaten my weight in their Pheonix roll w/ creamy ponzu) and their Spider roll kicked so many levels of ass it wasn't funny.
2. SF Moma Cafe I had the most heavenly Chicken Crepes with balsamic sauce and pomegrante seeds. Paired w/ a glass of wine, a perfect mid day meal. YUMMY!
1. Slanted Door I cannot even begin to describe how yummy this was. Vietnamese food is my favourite cuisine, and its been a while since I've had it, so I was primed. We started w/ the veggie rolls (both spring and imperial) and was blown away by the crispy imperial ones. They were paired w/ the lettuce and mint to wrap them with (SO hard to find places that do the mint too!), then moved onto the catfish claypot & cellophane noodles w/ dungeness crabmeat. Finished by sharing desserts the Ginger tapioca pudding with Fuyu persimmon compote and the E. Guittard dark chocolate pot de crème with espresso granité Our meal, including 2 glasses of wine (A german riesling (karlsmühle, kabinett, kaseler nies'chen, ruwer, 2002) that was SO good that I had the waitress write it down for future consuption -- it was more of a chardonnay than a riesling) was just a little over our salads at Cafe Zuni, but was so superiour it wasn't funny.

Date: 2004-12-15 08:11 pm (UTC)I'm also with you re: Slanted Door -so.damn.good. Unfortunately, I got food poisoning the one time I was there while nobody else did. I think it was a fluke.
Girl, you know how to do your restaurants! Ace Wasabe sounds awesome! Sounds like a great trip!

Date: 2004-12-15 08:43 pm (UTC)DH is usually pretty bad w/ restaurants when we travel -- he doesn't scope things out and just goes for what's in the immediate area. Too many trips have resulted in us being hungary, snipping at each other, and eating so so food, that I've invested in Fodors guides for wherever we travel.

Date: 2004-12-15 10:29 pm (UTC)The one time I had a flight scheduled to SF was when Chicago got smacked with a huge storm and I couldn't get out. Sniff!!! I'll get there someday....
