we had an odd discussion this past weekend with someone from Michigan....and since a few of you on my FL are from there or from the midwest area, figured that I'd post a poll!

Although I live in MI now most of my names for things comes from growing up on the east coast. Most of the time I stick to "my roots" with this kind of thing - lollipop / sucker, cart / buggy, soda / pop, water fountain / drinking fountain, 10 of (as in 8:50) / 10 to, etc. Although I'm actually not sure of the couch / sofa choice which is more east coast! This one I tend to use both but mostly say couch.

Hav you ever heard of someone calling it a "Davenport"?

I've heard of that term but I don't remember when or why. Certainly not in everyday conversation.

For some reason I think of the south when I think of the word davenport for a couch.

I didn't vote since I'm not from Micigan or the Midwest but I call it a couch. The only person I've ever heard call it a davenport is my Grandmother. She's always lived in central PA.

My mother and I had this conversation a few years ago. She remembers hearing her own mother -- who was from Ohio -- call it a davenport.

I have a Canadian friend who once gave me a big lesson on what a Davenport was vs. a sofa vs. a couch. I couldn't follow so I still just call everything a sofa or a couch as the mood strikes. ;)
