Within the past year, read & loved:
Memoirs of a Geisha
Secret Life of Bees
Time Traveler's Wife
The Red Tent
Incident of Dog in the Night
Kite Runner
Angels & Demons
a few of the Jennifer Weiner books, etc. 

Not really into Chick Lit, don't really like Nicholas Sparks.

Any suggestions?

Anything by David Sedaris.

I read it last Christmas & really enjoyed it -- its got this fantastic far-away feel to it that really pulls you in from the beginning
