Friday: met friends down in DC for mediocre Thai food and an evening with the Second City Performers (as in SCTV). There were 6 of them, some funny skits, but overall, I'd give them a B. Not something I'd go see again.

Saturday: Went to Lowes in the morning to get some info on paint effects to tone down the dining room. Didn't like what they were doing, left, went to the grocery and stocked up for the week. Went home, did some cleaning, took 2 hr nap, took bath, went to bed.

Sunday: Plan was to go run errands, take Sammy to the dog park, head home, go to prenatal yoga class.
What really happened: ran errands, went to dog park, and as we were stopping for slurpees on the way back (no more than 10 mintues away), realized that my backpack wasn't in the car and had, infact, fallen off of the roof where Judd put it.

Let's review the contents of my pack:
-wallet
-cell phone
-govt issues Palm Pilot
-house keys w/ Judd's work keys on them.
-sunglasses.

The road where the bag fell is pretty heavily traveled both by vehicular traffic and by foot. It had to have been less than 15 minutes since we'd lost the bag when we drove back to look for it. GONE. not a trace. I assumed that someone waiting for one of the busses picked it up. I felt ill, and Judd felt even worse.

Get back in the car, Judd calls a locksmith and I start calling all of the cards that Judd has in his wallet that I have....cancelled everything I could (Chase banks' computers were down, so I couldn't do anything about that one). Called Verizon to get info on phone and found out that there was a call made 20 minutes ago..um NOT me. Put phone on lockdown and that was about all I could do. I was pissed, but more annoyed at the mess I'd have to go through with rebuilding my stuff.

We get home & met the locksmith who was unable to pick the lock (would have been $100) and had to drill it and replace it ($250, cash). We get inside and find a message on the home phone from a guy who claimed he found my bag, everything intact (except for the airplane grade aluminum case of the palm pilot which was smashed). Met him this morning at a nearby home depot and made the exchange. He wouldn't take any cash or anything as a 'reward', but gave me his business card (he does dock/bulkhead work) to send business his way if I could.

I think I'm going to send a cookie basket or muffin basket to his office as a thanks.

SO after all of that, Judd owes me a home-cooked dinner and chores for the week!

Lessons:
-- don't let Judd put things on the roof
-- Mountainsmith bags are indestructable
-- Have extra keys made and left at neighbors
-- metal Palm Pilot cases save the day
-- having entire contents of wallet xeroxed and kept in safe place at home makes canceling cards really helpful.

That's a nice gesture on your part. What a good samaritan, indeed! Wow, so the metal case really does work, eh?

well, I've spend all morning trying to find an addy for the guy - his business card doesn't have a street address, x-referencing the numbers on the card leads to someone's home, and nothing online or in the yellow pages on their company.

weird...

Maybe he's a consultant working from home?

dunno - according to the card, they do dredging, etc., and none of the people on the phone # are George. I may call and get an address anyway.

I used to do this all the time for various reasons.. call, say "I have a letter to send to George at X company, but I don't have an address. Can you give me that?" 99% of secretaries are happy to have such a quick call and don't ask why.

Wow. At least you got it all back...is that what the one phone call was on the cell phone? The guy used it to find your number and ring you?

yup! He looked up 'home' in my phone and called home!

If I were him, I'd have also left a message on my work phone (business card was on top of my palm pilot) -- if we'd gotten the message earlier, we could have met him last night....

the one I have is about 3-4 years old and was made by Franklin Covey...its not the 'rhinoskin' one, which I thought was way too bulky.

It's so great when things like that have a happy ending...makes you feel good about your fellow man! :D

That is so nice!!! Its a crazy coincidence b/c I left my purse in a shopping cart at Babies R Us on Sunday and when I realized it on MONDAY - we called and they had it. I'm amazed b/c its a busy store in a less-than-perfect town. My cash was still in there.

Hope you are able to get a little thank-you to the guy.
