well, i've done a few hours of online research, talking to a few photogs at work and have narrowed my choices down to these two:

Canon Rebel XL
Nikon D70

The Nikon is about $150-$200 more and is only 6.2 mpgs versus the 8mpg Canon, but the read difference is in the details, which I can't really think about until I can hold them in my hand this weekend....

I hope to get this in early July in order to be comfortable with it before my parent's party on the 10th.

I've never used the Canon, but the Nikon D70 is pretty great. I used it for my friends' wedding a few weeks ago. It took good pictures and had quite a bit of oomph. But I gotta be honest with you, and I'm seriously not trying to push my camera, but I like my Olympus better than the Nikon. The Olympus is a little more user-friendly for me, and the shutter speed is rockin'. However, the Nikon did come with more accessories than the Olympus. And I have heard a million great things about the Canon Rebel. Once you get up into the SLR's, I don't think you're going to end up with a bad camera either way.

I think you're right about not ending up w/ a bad camera...I think its all about the lenses, and I've been a fan of Canon lenses forever...I will def. check out the one that you have this weekend - I plan on parking my butt down in Best Buy and playing away!
