pop culture roundup

-I've been devouring everything I can by Jhumpa Lahiri (started with The Namesake, recently finished Unaccustomed Earth, (a collection of stories that are perfect and haunting) and soon will start w/ her first collection of stories, Interpreter of Maladies as soon as it comes in from the interlibrary loan. Thanks to all of you who recommended her! Def my new favorite author, and such a welcome change from the tripe I seem to have been reading earlier
-Eat Pray Love - yes, I finaly picked this up, probably the last person on earth to do so.. I didn't mind it as much as I thought I would, but was getting annoyed with her "how I came to this [book advance paid] spiritual journey". Enjoyed reading about the food and language exploration of Rome and could relate a bit to the time she spent in India (glad I'm not the only one who gets frustrated while trying to become centered and introspective). I HATED the last /Indonesian part with a passion. The previous 2 sections I found her to be amusing, the last, annoying and preachy and self important.
-Twilight -- (reading now) A copy came up on the interlibrary loan and I'm about 20 pages in. It is NOT spectacular writing , but entertaining, esp for a beach read.
------------
Movies:
Finally saw Once, after being on my Netflix queue forever.
cesariohaines, if you haven't seen this, get it now. It's billed as a 'modern day musical' which is kind of misleading.....the songs are very natural and unforced, and kind of like Pieces of April, its just a sweet, wonderful story....
I love in the DVD extras that Greg described the film as a little slice about his friendship, so in the years to come, if they drifted apart ,there would be a little bit of them captured. Knowing the success they've had with the film and with Swell Season, its sweet and enduring to see that it was really just made for themselves....
also, was anyone else thinking something horrible was going to happen? Like the little girl would get sick and die? Or his dad would get stabbed in a robbery? damn you hollywood for making me such a cynic!!!
