The Birth House, by Ami McKay

Summary: Early 20th century girl in Nova Scotia becomes a reluctant midwife.

My thougths: liked this, but took me a looong time to get into it (no reason for that really!) This was entertaining, but I like midwife books. Had the right amount of "OMG how could the Evil Doctor think that!?!" thrown in with a little scandal....

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen

Summary: story of a college boy who, due to unfortunate circumstanes, runs away to join the circus. (I wouldn't read the amazon blurb, because it was a little spoilerish...I mean nothing that you can't really GUESS might happen, but still its fun to let it unfold)

Picked this one up in Costco before our trip the other week and really enjoyed it. I love me some circus freaks! Fast read, a bit historical, delves into a world that I'm not familiar with, and has well developed, memorable characters. little cliched in terms of the plot and the way its formatted (old guy looking remembering), but fun. This one would make a cool movie.

I haven't read Water for Elephants but it is being made into a movie. It might still be in negotiations but the guy that did the Bourne series has the rights to it.
