I typically don't comment on current events, esp political ones in LJ, but I've been thinking a lot about the whole mess with Sen. Craig, and while I think he's a creepy hypocrite, I'm kind of surprised to say that I'm defending him......kind of
I haven't researched the trials and tribulations of Senators and who gets 'relieved from office' for what, but if Ted Kennedy (or, hell, Bill Clinton!!) can stay, so can Larry Craig.
I'm seeing this as a senator who got caught in a prostitution sting. Gay/Straight/Bi whatever....the guy was just looking for some from a willing participant. And the last time I checked, gay sex wasn't outlawed in Minnesota (or is it?).
Now, his take on 'pleading guilty to make it go away' and hearing the audio tapes with his indignant "I am NOT GAY" makes you wonder if he's trying to convince himself, and I hope the audio tape of the interrogation where the cop keeps saying "people vote for you, you should be ashamed" doesn't lead to an investigation that this was a sting or that Craig was enticed into 'communicating' in the bathroom.
I'm not defending his character - I still think he's a bigot who's passion for voting against gay rights is despicable, and while I enjoy the media lynching of an Ultraconservative, but in all honesty, how different is this from the guy hitting on a girl at a party and them disappearing into a bedroom for a little consensual play?
Its what he was doing in his own time, and to protect the rights of all, who cares if he's a user of the airport glory hole.....

Date: 2007-08-31 04:38 pm (UTC)I don't really think he did anything wrong. there's nothing really wrong with picking up a guy in a bathroom. It's gross, because it is a bathroom. It's nasty because he is a stinking hypocrite. And I love seeing what a hypocrite he is. I have always thought that supressed homosexuality was at the heart of the Republican anti-gay movement. But as far as pleading guilty to the lesser charge, that is exactly what I would do too.
