VIEWS ON EVOLUTION/CREATIONISM from CBS news.

This REALLLLLY surprised me. (not so much the kerry/bush breakdown, but the overall country's beliefs)

God created humans in present form
All Americans 55%
Kerry voters 47%
Bush voters 67%

Humans evolved, God guided the process
All Americans 27%
Kerry voters 28%
Bush voters 22%

Humans evolved, God did not guide process
All Americans 13%
Kerry voters 21%
Bush voters 6%

Every now and then we hear about the Evolution Showdown in some Southern state, but I didn't realize that the majority of the country thinks that science has no part in how we are today. Truely shocking. How does 55% of the population explain 'primative cavemen'? Are they a species that just died out??!

In a related story, some pharmisists aren't filling prescriptions for birth controll pills because you should let babies happen. The woman interviewed leaves something to be desired in terms of her statements, but is a good example of who could get confused based on what a pharmacist said. What about those who need to regulate their cycle with BCP??

Those stats make me wonder even more what direction the US is headed. It seems like rather than being a country of diversity (large scale) and freedom a large portion of society is "thinking like one".

Judd looked into this more and found out that only 800 people were polled, and he hates seeing statistics like this, saying that while a coin can be indifferent, there's no way that a person can't remain unbiased when getting surveyed. HOwever, the overall trend is still there and still scares me.

I don't think there was ever a time where I DIDN'T think humans evolved.......

The trend is scary to me too. I will stick to my basic argument - any country/state/region that has gone the route of theocracy has become a non-progressive, troubled, backwards part of the world. We cry out about the oppression of people in the Middle East who are held to some (faulty) man's version of Islam...yet what happens in this country when we have an extreme right version of Christianity thrust upon all of us?? (OK, I'll shut up now - its just a HUGE hot button for me)

no kidding. In Maryland, all of the official flagpoles with the state flag have a gold cross at the top of them. I remember asking my 11th grade govt. teacher about seperation of church/state, and she claimed it wasn't a cross as much as it was a symbol of the Calvert family who helped found the state. Um, so a cross that isn't a Cross??
