Hey [livejournal.com profile] onelargecat and/or [livejournal.com profile] ami_tutti and anyone else who's a Nikon SLR'er..

I'm on the verge of buying a few more lenses for my D50 (still have the kit lens). I'm thinking for now:

-nikkor 50mm f/1.4 (used)
-nikkor 70-300 ED (used)

anyone have any experience with either of these? or alternatives I should look at, esp if the 50mm f/1.8 is just as good for less $$?
I def need a fast lens for Ben

I'm lusting after the 18-200 VR, and have a friend who works in a camera shop who'll get me 15% off, but its still $$ for now.

It is refreshing that lenses are one of those things that DO hold most of their value and can be resold easily....

hmmmm, what does the D50 come with?
i have the D70 and i love the lens it came with.
and, oh my, i would LOVE the 18-200.
i'm a wide angle freak, though.
i've had the standard 50mm lens when i had a nikon camera camera and meh.
personally, i'd go with the 70-300.
and, i'd save up for the yummy 18-200 one.

the d50 comes with a 18-55mm and it is pretty nice. I can remember the first time I shot wide angle w/ it and was amazed.

I may pass on the 300 for now....save those $$ for spring and get the 18-200. from what I've read, its the holy grail

I've got the 50mm f/1.8 and the 70-300mm lens both. I didn't really consider the 50mm f/1.4 b/c it was so much more expensive...but really, f/1.8 is really fast. It's an awesome lens--quality is superb. I would definitely recommend it.

The 70-300mm lens is so-so. Honestly it's so long (especially on the digital, where the cropping factor makes it more like a 105-450mm) that I find it's not very useful. I almost never am willing to go without a wider lens. The quality is fine, but I don't use mine nearly as much as I thought I would. It's great for taking pictures at the zoo. So far that's been where mine has gotten the most use. I've never used it for baby pics...too slow indoors (we don't have as much natural light in our house as I'd like) and way too long for indoors.

So, I guess I'm not helping, since I've said exactly the opposite of what the other commenter said!

good point about the 70-300mm being so long - I had thought about the weight, but not so much the overall length of it to haul around.

and I will check out the f/1.8. the price is so different, even in used.

So maybe I'll get the 50mm f/1.8 and save up for the 18-200 VR...

thanks :)

That 18-200 VR lens will be amazing. :) I'd love the VR feature. Too bad this is such an expensive habit. There are a couple lenses I would love to have, but they are waaay to pricey for me to justify them right now.
